Four jam-packed days of the best musical entertainment around. Where else will you see top Asian, swing and soul artists plus the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on one bill? Mica Paris, Omar and Soul II Soul, who come to Under the Stars for the first time, are household names, respected nationally and internationally for their smooth grooves and soulful voices.
Seen recently as a presenter on the BBC’s What Not To Wear, Mica's roots are in soul and gospel music. The range, power, and sheer soulfulness of her singing made a major impact in the UK. Her debut album, So Good, went platinum and she had a top ten hit with You Are My One Temptation. Mica has worked with many international artists, including Prince.
Grammy award winners Soul II Soul come to Under the Stars on Friday 31 August bringing their unique blend of soul and dance. Soul II Soul, with frontman Jazzie B, began as a sound system in the early 80s and were best known for their smash hit singles Keep On Movin' featuring Caron Wheeler and Back To Life.
Now one of the UK’s biggest international soul artists, Omar has remained an uncompromising artist, from his breakthrough hit There’s Nothing Like This back in ’91 through to a succession of hit albums. Last year he released the album Sing (If You Want It) which included a whole list of A-list guests including Stevie Wonder.
It doesn’t end here. September is Music and Dance month with a huge variety of activities and events including films in parks with BBQs! Look out for more detailed information in the Newham Mag.
